America's First Craft Distillers Guild
It is my pleasure to share with you that the Legislative Agenda of the Oregon Distillers Guild was met with great enthusiasm by the Oregon Legislature for the 2012 legislative session.
Over the last year the ODG has been working on a pilot project that would allow distilleries the ability to sell packaged goods directly to the consumer at trade shows and other special events - similar to the wine and beer industry.
To that end, over the last several weeks and months, we have worked with the OLCC, Legislative Counsel, and Representative Chris Harker of House District 34 (Beaverton/Cedar Hills) to revise ORS 471.230 (the statute that governs our operations) to allow us to sell bottled spirits at specail events.
The result was HB 4092
With a few appearances before the various legislative commitees to provide backround information on our industry and how this bill would assist our industry in the face of a challenging future, this bill passed both the House and Senate and has now been signed into law by Governor Kitzhaber
For those that track such things the vote distribution was as follows:
House
Yes: 59
No: 0
Absent: 1
Senate
Yes: 30
No: 0
Once the law takes effect, the OLCC will still have to carry out the rule making processs. They are expecting this bill and are eager to get this program going as soon as possible. Long and short, we will be able sell at the upcoming 2012 TOAST event!
With warmest regards and cheers,
Erik L. Martin
